CAPTAINS REPORT 08/01/08

This is the third captain’s report for the season 2007/2008

The club has not raced at any events since the last report in December so the wins remain the same men 10, women 2, juniors 7, total wins 19. This is down on the corresponding period last year, when on the same date we had a total of 33 wins.

The naming of the ladies new Swift four, took place as planned on the 9th December. The ceremony was very well attended with members old and new. Jack Roberts was on hand to name the boat in memory of his late wife Joan. Jack was supported on the day by his daughter and granddaughter. Fred CaswIll was on hand to wish Jack a belated 90th happy birthday. A glass of Champagne was raised to jack, a fitting recognition for a real gentleman, who has been a member of Stourport boat club for most of his life. With so many members in attendance the decision was made to present the outstanding prizes from the cancelled dinner dance. The prizes were presented by Jack Roberts with a little help from club president Paul Danby. Club person of the year went to Andy Ray for his invaluable behind the scenes work around the club. Most improved went to Andy Morris in recognition of the great strides he has made during the year, culminating in his efforts at the world masters regatta in Zagreb.

The annual Christmas pudding races took place on Saturday the 29th December. I took the daring decision to move the event from its usual morning spot to a new start time of 13:30. The event was very well supported with 40 men, women and juniors taking part. The course for the event was down stream, pumping station to the club. We witnessed some very good racing, with the eventual winners being. David Lloyd, Alex Barnett, Ashley Price and Artiom Eknov  coxed by Becki Gibson.

The Sunday morning squad rowing has been a great success enabling members of all ages and abilities to take to the water every week. I am now going to change from the squad rowing format, and start to develop racing crews for the coming season. The first event on the calendar, being our own winter head on the 27th January.

Plans are being made by Paul Danby and myself to run a weekend training camp away from the club at lake vernwy in Wales some time during February. This will be for limited numbers but if successful could be expanded in the future.

CAPTAINS REPORT 04/12/07
This is the second Captains report for the season 2007/2008

The season continued with Stourport autumn small boats head on Sunday 08/11/07. We had 8 wins over the 2 divisions they are as follows.

OVD 4x Tom Edwards, Richard Lloyd, Keith Barwise, stroked by Don Taylor.

OVB 4- Pete Spencer, Tim Haywood, Keith Barwise, stroked by Simon Rush.

OJ15 1x Gary Hickman.

WJ!4 2x Hannah Brighton, Zoe Harvey.

WJ14 1x Hannah Brighton.

Thanks to Paula, Jo and every one who helped in the kitchen the day’s efforts were a great success.

Our next competitive event should have been Evesham small boats head. This was cancelled with 2 days to the event because the ground in the trailer parking area was thought to be too soft. This is a great shame as they lost the corresponding event last year, due to high river levels.

Then onto Wycliffe small boats head on 01/12/07 where we managed just 1 win that being.

OS4 2x Dan Brighton, Matt Brighton.

Win’s so far this season:  Men 10, women 2, Juniors 7. Total 19

Since the last report we have had some excellent squad rowing on Sunday mornings. People of all ages and abilities have taken part, and everyone seems to be enjoying the experience. We have also run our first mini head of the winter with 10 crews taking part. The event produced some great racing. Hat’s off to Tony Price for his effort in his single in difficult conditions. A big thank you to the time keepers, with out them the event could not have taken place.

Our next mini head is planned for Sunday 09/12/07 racing starts at 10:00. The racing is followed at 12:30 by a boat naming ceremony. The new ladies Swift is being named Joan Roberts, Jack Roberts will be present to name the boat in memory of his late wife.

The junior dinner dance organised by Paula Brighton was a great success with juniors of all ages dressed to impress. The evening included the presentation of some prizes which would usually have been presented at the Main dinner dance. These were

Cox of the year: Becki Davis

Junior of the year: Matt Brighton

Well done to both of them.

We have now more competitive events in 2007, but we do have the Christmas pudding races on Sat 29/12/07. Every one is most welcome.

Thank you for your support during 2007 Merry Christmas

OVetC 4+ Paul Danby, John Davies, Pete Lashford, stroked by Andy Morris and coxed by Becki Gibson finished 39th

Junior wins 2, Men’s wins 7, Women’s wins 1.

Next event: Stourport Small boats Head. Sunday 11/11/07 in 2 divisions at 11:15 and 14:00

Other matters

It was with great regret that our annual dinner Dance was cancelled just a week before the event, due to lack of ticket sales. Thanks to the people who had bought tickets and to Leslie who had  tried very hard to make the event a success. An event to present prizes needs to be organised as soon as possible.

The bank above the landing stage has now been rebuilt and thanks must go to Andy Ray for his part in organising the project and to Fred Caswell for stepping in with the laying of the landing stage concrete. The bank and landing stage are a great improvement and I am sure everyone will agree it was money well spent.

Squad rowing on a Sunday morning at 09:30 is going very well with around 20/30 members taking part each week. This includes novice men and women, veterans and anyone else who wants to take part. The aim of the squad rowing is to get the individuals rowing as a club.

Stourport Veteran and Junior Head of the River: Saturday 22 Sept 2007 RESULTS

Ross Regatta Weekend 30th – 31st August
I had hoped to go out in a blaze of glory at Ross our last Regatta of the season. We had a few combinations put together who had a good chance of winning. However with the sweeping bend and a strong wind we had somevery close races, unfortunately most of them went in favor of the opposition! Verdicts of 2ft were recorded twice and even a loss by 6 inches!! Our only win came from the girls Quad rowing at S3 status well done to Jess Danby, Rachel Saunders, Becki Saunders and Becki Davies.

So, here we have it, the final wins tally for the 2005- 2006 Season:
Juniors – 71 Men – 47 Women – 21 Total 139

In all a total of 85 individuals won at least once and we had 9 different people winning as coxes.
The main highlight for me was the way everyone pulled together and supported all the different events we attended, both in house and further a field. From the first mini head of the winter and the superb attendance rates at Monday night Gym, right through to Ross at the end of August everything was so well supported.
We attended all the major Tideway Heads, Nat Vets, Nat Schools, Henley, Henley Vets and The National Championships.
We raised a considerable amount from a sponsored row. We got a brand new Coxed four and refurbished the eight.
Juniors and Seniors worked together and a fantastic support group was always in attendance at all the events we competed at.

I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to everyone who helped to make my Captaincy such a rewarding and enjoyable experience in particular thanks to Pete Lashford I could not have asked for a better Vice Captain. I am now looking forward to the dinner dance in October where we can officially celebrate our success as a club.

Stewart Barnett
Captain Stourport Boat Club 2005-2006

Stourport Regatta 12th and 13th August 2006
This years Regatta was hailed by all as a great success. Regatta Secretary Paul Danby did a great job in organizing the event, and all club members worked very hard over the two days playing host to a large entry from all over the Country. We ran a brand new course this year on the Sunday, upstream about 450 metres in distance. Rowing is always close over this distance and some very exciting races took place. This was great for the crowd in the enclosure adding to the atmosphere. All went very smoothly and Stourport managed a total of 20 wins over the two days.

Lewis Beech Junior World Champion!
Fantastic result for Lewis, rowing in the Junior men’s Coxless four he won gold at the world Junior Championships in Holland.
Lewis has shown tremendous dedication and commitment to gain this remarkable achievement and we are all very proud of him at Stourport.
Credit must also go out to his Coach Tim Dorrell who has spent many hours coaching him both Sculling and Sweep oar and has kept him focused on his ultimate goal.

National Championships Strathclyde Scotland
We were very well represented at this years Nat Champs. The long trip was made much more bearable by the fantastic weather. The trip will be remembered more for the weather and great atmosphere than for The medals. That said with the Junior squad in a transition year and starting to sweep oar there were some very encouraging performances.

Bewdley Regatta Weekend
The Juniors were back on form at Bewdley we managed in all 14 wins 5 of which were at senior level.

Henley Qualifying 23/6/06
Two crews went down to Henley on Friday to try to qualify for the best Regatta in the world. The Thames Cup crew comprised Ben Adams, Stew Barnett, Chris Bird, Pete Lashford, Graham Wiggins, Paul Danby, Tim Haywood and Mat Lashford coxed by Becci Gibson and the Junior Quad for the Fawley Challenge was Dan Brighton, Mat Brighton, Alex Gavin and Nick Feathers.
For the eight it was the main goal of the entire season. We needed to beat 15 other crews to qualify and it was always going to be a tough call. We couldn't have rowed any better. Team spirit and morale was the best anyone had ever experienced and everyone quite literally pulled together and fought for each other and for their club. In the end it wasn’t quite good enough this time but everyone onboard was inspired and enthused by the whole experience. All showed the level of commitment and drive to keep the hardest boat of all together and…. we’ll be back!
Thanks go out to Stu Winter and David Lloyd who brought us on considerably in the weeks leading up to qualifying.

The Quad rowed their best but for a crew only put together a couple of weeks prior to the event expectations were realistic and they too failed to qualify. Again though the taste for Henley is sweet and they will be back again next year.

Ironbridge Regatta 24th - 25th June
The Ironbridge weekend, always a favorite with us all at Stourport, once again lived up to expectations. The weather was great, entertainment was excellent on Saturday night and we came away with 15 wins, chalking up our Century of wins for the season in the process.
Saturday saw our two eights race head to head for the fist time since Stourport Winter Head. With the Senior Eight just back from Henley qualifying and the Vet. Eight going for Vet. Henley in two weeks rivalry was intense. Off the start there was nothing in it with the vets holding onto the advantage of the first bend. 500 mteres gone and still too close to call, but then the 2k training schedule kicked in and the senior crew won in the end with clear water. Both crews shook hands and we all reminded ourselves that we actually all row for the same club!
Fred had also entered two eights at Novice and Senior 4 so the club had actually managed to boat 4 senior eights! The Novice crew rowed superbly to win the event. Many of the senior men also got wet when we went down to christen their new senior status including the Captain picked up and thrown single handedly by a J16! (Well Wayne Cooper is 4 stone heavier than me, and he did creep up on me from behind)
Our Nat Champ girls rowing at S2 status outclassed Bewdley to win their event. Well done Jess, Laura, Beccy and Stacey. Beccy Saunders also won S4 Sculls another great result.
Mat Brighton and his “ Little Pinkie” looked a class act winning J15 Sculls. Laura Ray Sculled well to win Junior Sculls. Nicki Price also looked very strong and sculled well to win J16 Sculls. Mr Saunders got a nice Vet D pot to bring the Saturday total to 8 wins....... Party On!!

For some the morning after the night before left them feeling a little jaded, good job the short course is on the Sunday!
Fred’s boys had another good win in the S4 8. Great to see the junior squad winning at sweep oar events. The Women have started to put together some strong combinations. Particularly good was the four of Harriet Betson, Jo Fuller, Rachel Thomas and Sarah Hough. Coxed by Harriet Conway, they took on a classy York crew in the final and with an awfull lot of grit and style beat them. The York Crew looked gob-smacked. Well done girls!
Once again the WJ4X raced at Senior 2 Level and outclassed Gloucester. Jules and Mary powered their way to the S3 2X title. Mat Brighton made it 2 for the weekend in his “little Pinkie” Nicola Price won the single again with a strong, gutsy finish, and Hannah Brighton once again proved too strong for her opposition to win the J12 1x title.
So all-in-all a very successful weekend for all sections of the club. Men, Women and Juniors were all well represented and in total 15 wins were gained.
Well done to all the following Winners:
Saturday
MS28+ -  Ben Adams, Stew Barnett, Chris Bird, Pete Lashford, Graham Wiggins, Paul Danby, Tim Haywood, Mat Lashford coxed by Becci Gibson

Novice 8+ - Dan Brighton, Dale Gough, Sam Maher, Wayne Cooper, Joe Dyer, Nick Feathers, Brett Gwilliam, Kyle Claar coxed by Becki Davies
WS24X -  Laura Ray, Jess Danby, Stacey Gwilliam, Becky Saunders
WS4 1X – Becky Saunders
J15 1X – Mat Brighton
WJ 1X – Laura Ray
WJ16 1X – Nicki Price
VET D 1X – Paul Saunders
Sunday
OS4 8+ - Dan Brighton, Nick Feathers, Sam Maher, Mat Brighton, Nick Danby, Alex Gavin, Dan Hastie, Jamie Wrafter coxed by Becki Davies
WS3 4+ - Harriet Betson, Jo Fuller, Rachel Thomas, Sarah Hough, coxed by Harriet Conway
WS2 4X -  Lara Ray, Jes Danby, Stacey Gwilliam, Becky Saunders
WS3 2X – Julia Saunders, Mary Bytheway
J15 1X – Mat Brighton
WJ15 1X – Nicola Price
WJ12 1X – Hannah Brighton

The Wins to date now look like this:
Juniors -  54 Senior Men – 34 Senior Women – 15
Total Wins - 103

Shrewsbury Regatta 13th –14th May 2006
Saturday

With a good level of competition entered, Shrewsbury, our first two day Regatta, was always going to be a tough challenge to win at. We sent 50 different combinations and managed two senior wins and seven Junior wins. We narrowly missed out in several other events this all bodes well for the rest of the season with a number of crews now in regular training.
On Saturday our Elite Four of Lee Clark, Simon Brown, Chris and Lewis Beech, coxed by Becci Gibson were competing for the prestigious West of England Vase and £500 prize money. They rowed down the Hereford Elite four to win the first round but were then beaten in the next round by Worcester who went on to win the event.
Our senior 2 eight was totally outclassed by a top drawer Shrewsbury schoolboy eight who totally dominated from the off. Credit where its due Shrewsbury are set to take some major honors this year expect to see them in the final at Henley in July.
Big things were expected from our senior 3 four of Ben Adams, Graham Wiggins, Mat Lashford and Dale Gough having rowed very well at Notts City a couple of weeks back, They beat Warwick and Royal Chester and the stage was set for a semi final showdown against old rivals Bewdley. Our boys were unable to match much improved Bewdley who went on to win the event quite comfortably. That said our main boat is the eight and Bewdley are training exclusively in the four.
A number of promising womens combinations were also on show we were able to boat 4 different crews from Novice through to senior 2 over the weekend. If these crews continue to train I feel sure success will soon follow.
It was pleasing to see the Double of Mary Bytheway and Julia Saunders put together a good paddle and reap the rewards of their hard training to secure the Senior 3 Double win on Saturday.
The first Junior win came from ‘Big Al’ Barnett who had to dig in to win the J14b event.
Sunday
The senior 2 eight rowed better today losing to a quality Queens college eight with queens on the favoured far side we stayed in touch to the bridge and lost by 1l.
Duncan Gwilliam showed his class by winning a final against Roland Hart from Bewdley with Hart giving his absolute all to try to take the one scalp that has always eluded him, our Dunc held much better form and took it by well over two lengths nice one!
Stacey and Jess in the J18 2X looked very good to take the Junior Double pot.
Hannah Brighton and Katie Haywood resumed their Partnership and sculled very well together in winning the J14 double.
Rachel Saunders sculled very well to win the J15b title. Alex Barnett got his brace of pots winning the J14b single again. Hannah Brighton racing in open J12 sculls took on all the boys and sculled well to win the event .
We entered two J18 quads and unfortunately they had to race each other. The experience (all be it some what jaded from a rather indulgent Party night the previous evening) finally told and the quad consisting Dan Brighton, Alex Gavin, Nick Feathers and Jamie Rafter won.

Junior Inter – Regional Championships Nottingham Sunday 14th May.
Fred took two crews up to the Regional Champs. The quad of Mat Brighton Sam Maher, Nick Danby and Luke Barnett and a double of Nicky Price and Charlotte Gibson. They both sculled very well to make the A final.
The Quad who have not been in the best of form leading up to the event finally clicked back into the smooth unit that saw them win the National schools title last year and narrowly missed out on the silver. They won a creditable bronze medal. If they get into a regular training regime they could be challenging for gold at the National Schools in a few weeks time.
The recently established J15 combination of Nicola Price and Charlotte Gibson did extremely well to finish 6th overall. With conditions strongly favoring the bigger athletes they showed grit and determination and done us proud.

National Schools Championships  Nottingham 26th-28th May
Bronze Medal For Lewis Beech
Lewis Beech Sculled very well to secure a well earned Bronze Medal at the National Schools Regatta. Lewis has mainly been sweep rowing recently in the National Junior squad so to compete with the best Scullers around and get 3rd was a great performance.
Mat Brighton made it through the time trial and finished 3rd in his semi, not bad considering his main boat was the quad.
Two J15 girls doubles were rowing in new combinations and not surprisingly sculled hard but were unable to make the finals
The boys J16 quad got through the eliminator time trial only to put up a lackluster performance in the semi. This was disappointing after they had finished third at the inter – regionals just a couple of weeks previously.
The Girls J18 quad and current national champions made the final but were unable to medal..
Laura Ray had a good gauge at what she’s going to be up against as a single sculler competing at J18 level. Having made it through the processional race she finished third in her semi.
Chief Coach Fred Caswill has stepped up a gear and seat raced the boys quad for an assault on Henley Qualifying. A new combination has been established and together with J18 girls are now training hard.

Northwich Regatta 29th – 30th May
Well done to Duncan Gwilliam who easily won vet c sculls at Northwich on Sunday. Also well done to sister act Jo Fuller and Paula Brighton who rowed well to win S2 coxless Pairs. Unusually no Junior wins to report for Sunday, however on Monday normal service was resumed with 6 junior wins.
Well done to the following combinations:

Equipment

  • The steppers and the bikes in the Gym are now all fully functional.
  • The Janousek men’s eight has been re-sprayed. Our thanks go out to Paul Stephenson for arranging the re-spray and also for carrying out much of the preparation on the hull. It looks superb and all done for half the cost of sending it back to the manufacturer. £500 towards the refurbishment has been kindly donated by Graham Wiggins’s Mum who would like the boat to be named in memory of Graham’s Father who died last year.
  • We recently took delivery of a brand new Lola AX front-loaded coxed four. This was the one boat the senior men were in real need of. This will take the pressure off the good old Andy Davis for years the first choice for the senior men.
  • It’s a lovely bit of kit and has already notched up its first win at Evesham. Thanks must go out to Fred Caswill for doing the deal with money raised by some of his sponsors, and to the sponsored row, which will go towards its purchase.

Works 4’s
Works 4’s are now out on the water Leslie Beddow and Mark Betson have done an excellent job in getting the schedule out and the boats prepped and ready to go.

The men’s senior 2 eight was a brand new combination with Lee Clark Mat Lashford Daryl Ormerod and Jason Harding sitting in.
With Paul Saunders sitting in the Vet Eight they were able to row at Vet C.
Unfortunately, the Evesham Vet C boat scratched leaving our boys with no opposition.
The Vet. Boat was keen to see if they could get close to the Worcester vet B 8 rowing at S2. Despite a boat stopper crab and another couple of sticky strokes they still managed to get inside 30 seconds of them.
The S2 8+ had a decent paddle beating Bewdley by nearly half a minute, but were some way off the winners Shrewsbury School.
The S24+ was the surprise of the day, beating their Worcester opposition by 5 seconds to take the win.
The Women’s S4 8 gained valuable race experience and the S2 women’s 4+ rowed well beating Warwick convincingly but were unable to match a class crew from Haberdashers.
So well done to The S24+ Who won.
Andy Morris, Mark Betson, Andy Ray, Paul Stevenson coxed by Becky Davis.
We have already notched up our half century with 50 wins to date.

Wins so far:
Juniors – 26
Men – 18
Women - 6

Stourport Winter Head 29/1/06
It became clear following the massive entry for our Winter Head that we were going to need a bigger Landing Stage!
Thanks to a pro team of scaffolders courtesy of Mr. Caswill and the kind loan of a floating pontoon from Upton RC, a bigger landing stage we most definitely got.
With over two hundred entries, organization was always going to be key. Paul Danby did an excellent job of that, and it was all Hands on deck for getting the crews boated on time. Marshalling went well and everyone worked well together both divisions went off virtually on time. Well done to everyone who helped make the day such a success.

Well done also to the following who all won:
MS2 8+ Simon Brown, Stew Barnett, Ben Adams, Pete Lashford, Chris Bird, Paul Danby, Graham Wiggins, Mark Phillips, coxed By Becki Gibson

Men’s 2nd 2k Ergo trial 14/12/05
An excellent turnout for the second 2k trial. A total of 7 people went sub 7! And three others were very close. A total of 20 people completed the test.
Everyone improved there score from the first test back in September, and if everyone continues to train hard, I am sure that the improvements will continue.

Men’s seat races 17/12/05
We raced 30 separate coxed four combinations and some real boat movers were established. However because of the complexity and inconsistency of the wind conditions the tests were by no means definitive. More trials will need to take place to test certain individuals further. My Thanks to Gary Davis for organising the matrix, and general help during the entire day which took about four hours to complete.
Special thanks to Becki and Charlotte Gibson and Becki Perkins for there coxing they were all on the water an awful long time in very cold conditions. Well done girls! My thanks also to everyone for turning up on the day, I think we all enjoyed it, (if that’s the right word) there were certainly some very interesting combinations!

Pudding races 18/12/05
With a glass of mulled wine inside them and their crews pulled out of the hat everyone had a fun morning at the annual pudding races.
It was great fun to get Men, Women, boys and girls all rowing together in some really unusual combinations. It was amazing how close many of the races were and how well everyone rowed together.

Men’s crews announced
The men’s squad has finally been sorted into some regular crews in preparation for the eights head. Three eights have been established and will now commence regular training together.
None of the combinations are cast in stone and the door remains open for anyone showing potential/commitment /improvement to get a seat in the first eight.

Women’s Squad
Pete Lashford has taken over the Women’s novice section and two crews have been put together. The senior Women are also being organised into crews subject to their availability.

What’s next?

4/2/06 – Wycliffe Big Head
25/2/05 – Worcester Head of the River

Fours Head of The River 12/11/2005
We sent two Senior crews and four Junior crews to the Fours Head. Lots of people were recovering from illness and under achieved as a result.
That said everyone gained experience and for many of the Juniors it was their first appearance on the Famous 4.25 mile stretch. They will all be able to watch the boat race and tell tales of how they rowed the same course (albeit in the reverse direction) as Oxford and Cambridge.

Evesham Head 26/11/05
Eight senior crews represented us at Evesham. Fortunately the horrendous weather originally forecast failed to materialise, and we put up some quite impressive times. It was very pleasing to see 2 Stourport crews in the top 5. The mens Senior 3 crew were only just off the fastest fours time of the day. We finished 1st and 2nd in Senior 2 fours our winning crew taking over 30 seconds out of the Bewdley Four. Our Vet C four outclassed the Evesham Four to win easily. Womens crews competed well at S4 and S2 level but were unable to acheive the fastest times.
Winners listed below:
S24+ Ben Adams, Stew Barnett, Ian Hough and Jason Harding Coxed by Becki Davies
Vet C 4+ Ian Hough, Keith Barwise, Steve Fuller, Dominic O’glochlin coxed by Charlotte Gibson.

Walton Small Boats Head 3/12/2005
Once again the Junior Squad ably supported by a senior and a veteran went enforce to Walton Small Boats head at the weekend. They all competed very well with some impressive times. They managed two wins, very good from a massive entry over four divisions.
The winners listed below:
Womens J 2X - Laura Ray, Jess Danby
Womens J 1x – Laura Ray
J2X  Composite Lewis Beech

Wycliffe Small Boats Head 3/12/05
Whilst the Juniors competed down at Walton, we took 12 senior combinations to Wycliffe. Again a lot of the combinations were scratch as we continue to mix and match, our squad system. We were 2nd in two events and managed to win S2 Coxless Pairs.
Winning crew:
S2 2- Ben Adams, Stew Barnett

Wins To Date:
Juniors 23, Men 12, Women 3.

General
About 20 people turned up for a go in the Hereford Rowing tank. This proved to be a very useful exercise. People who previously struggled to row suddenly found themselves looking quite proficient. This proves the value of coaching and being able to see oneself row. We will try and visit the tank again.

We had around 15 people turn up for the mountain bike ride on the 13th November. This was a great workout as well as a very scenic and enjoyable ride. Hopefully we will be able to do similar again when the river is too high to row.
Monday night training is continuing to break all previous records with the gym almost at bursting point. We have so far made about £280 profit towards our boat fund. Current thinking is that if we can raise enough we should purchase a new Ergo, something which everyone can benefit from.
Bungees, and skipping ropes arrived today these to be used as an extra training aid we will be using them at the Gym for the first time on Monday evening.
Forthcoming dates of note:
14/12/05 Mens 2nd 2k Ergo Test
15/12/05 Womens 2nd 2k ergo test
17/12/05 Mens Seat Racing at Gloucester.

Walton Small Boats Head 3/12/05
The Junior Squad went down to Walton and competed at one of the Countries Premier Small Boat Heads. They put up some impressive times and once again showed that we can compete with the best at Stourport.
Very well done to Laura Ray and Jess Danby who once again showed their pedigree and won WJ 2X, Laura also won WJ 1X a great performance.
WJ2X – Lara Ray, Jess Danby
WJ 1X – Laura Ray

Wycliffe Small Boats Head 3/12/05
Whilst the juniors were at Walton The Senior Squad went to Wyclife.
Continuing to operate our squad system we entered 3 S3 combinations in the morning, One put up the second fastest time of the day but the others were a bit off the pace. Not all marriages are made in heaven! We had expected a win from our S2 combinations in the next division but again they just weren’t quick enough.
Our Women’s S2 combination also competed in the afternoon division but had a bit of a shipwreck and consequently a slow time.
The best result came from Ben Adams and Stew Barnett who were the fastest coxless pair of the day and our only win.
S2 2- Ben Adams, Stew Barnett
Wins to Date:
Juniors - 23
Men – 12
Women - 3

Evesham Head November 26th 2005-11-28
Some very encouraging performances at Evesham the weekend. With the men’s squad again mixed and matched into various combinations competition was intense.
We had two women’s crews entered also. The S24+ of Paula Brighton, Jo Fuller, Julia Saunders and Mary Bytheway were unfortunately hampered by an injury to Paula at stroke, despite this they were not that far off the pace.
The Women’s S3 crew of Rachel Crowther,Annie Conway Di Ford and Jane Price, was held up in the ‘s’ bends but still managed a creditable 2nd equal place.
A fierce battle ensued for the S2 4+ title between the two Stourport crews and at half distance it was too close to call. Various attacks and pushes took place over the last half and Ben Adam’s crew managed to pull away.
The Vet C crew of Ian Hough, Keith Barwise, Steve Fuller and Dominic O’glochlin had rowed well in the morning division there opposition rowing in the afternoon division. They went on to  win comfortably.

So well done to the two winning crews:
S24+ Ben Adams, Stew Barnett, Ian Hough and Jason Harding Coxed by Becki Davies
Vet C 4+ Ian Hough, Keith Barwise, Steve Fuller, Dominic O’glochlin coxed by Charlotte Gibson.
Wins To Date:
Juniors 20

4 Crews competed at the Pairs Head on 15th November. It’s always good to compete on the Tideway and gauge ourselves against the best crews in the Country, and all gained valuable experience.

A number of Junior crews went down to Weybridge Silver Sculls on 22/10/05, where the following crews all won, great results from a top event:
W Maiden 1x Nicola Price

J15 1x Mat Brighton

Our wins to date are thus:
Juniors 20, Men 9 Women 3.

One of our former Juniors, Ashley Price, now a member of the Oxford Brooks University Squad, performed very well at the recent Lightweight GB trials at Boston. He was 5 th  fastest out of the 34 under 23 lwt’s and was the youngest under 23.
We were unable to race the Mini Head on the 23rd  Oct  due to river conditions so we ran it on the 6th November once again a great turnout Juniors and Seniors were all involved.
We have arranged a trip to the Hereford rowing tank for the Evening of Tuesday 15th November aiming to arrive at Hereford Rowing Club for about 7.15pm. This will be particularly good for the Novices or indeed anyone wishing to improve their technique. A notice has gone up on the board asking for a list of names

Equipment
We have a contact who is able to spray boats locally, saving us a considerable amount of money. He will use the same paint as the Boat Manufacturers use, all we need to do is the preparation. After the Fours head we will prep the Norman Gavin 4+ the boat currently in the worst condition.
All of the Gym equipment has been serviced and a separate report has been made on the cost of repairing the displays on the bikes and steppers.
All the ergos are now functioning correctly and batteries have been replaced.

Duncan Gwilliam has cleaned the Gym Floor

An article is to feature us in the Kidderminster Shuttle about our record amount of wins last year. We have also taken the opportunity to highlight our need for a Sponsor to help us fund another Boat.

Captains Report October 3rd 2005
24th September saw our first ever V&J head take place we managed to make up a total of 47 entries. The event went off well and we had a total of 14 wins, 8 Junior and 6 veteran.
25th September we ran the first mini head, everyone turned up and we managed to fill 56 seats. Some of the novices were rowing in their first ever head and all seemed to get a lot out of it.
The Juniors were away at the Dragon Boating which helped as we needed to borrow a boat to accommodate everyone. We may need to change the time in future if we are to get everyone in a boat.
20th and 21st September Men’s and Women’s ergo assessments. Fantastic turnout from the ladies. Not so good from the men, but slowly they are getting done only about 4 are now outstanding. Generally results were good, next one in  three months will hopefully see improvements due to structured training regime.
Monday night training has begun and turnout on 26th was excellent, 47 in total.
Wednesday and Thursday nights are men and women’s nights at club run and weight circuits underway.
We have 9 senior/veteran crews entered at Worcester head on 9th October. We have mixed and matched both men and women.

Equipment
The Aylings pair has new wheels and slides fitted and the Norman Gavin Four a new set of slides.
All Club boats have now been numbered. Private boats are being allocated numbers as and when I see them.
We need to order some white numbers for 7 private dark coloured boats.
All senior blades have been numbered and sorted. A new rack has been welded to wall in sculling shed allowing the blades out of launch room to be removed and new junior concept 2’s put in their place.
An anodised boat wash rack has been manufactured and is ready to be concreted into lawn.
