Stourport Regatta ... 1882

This annual affair came off on the Severn, in the vicinity of Stourport, over the usual course, extending from the bridge to about a mile upstream, on Monday. The meeting must be considered as of a second-class, only local boats - if we except the Hereford crews and a Manchester Irwell crew - putting in an appearance. None of the events were closely contested, the results being pretty well ascertained some distance before the winning crew reached the goal, as is commonly the case in events pulled against the stream. The weather was, on the whole, favourable, although a thunderstorm in the early part of the day no doubt kept away many intending visitors. The results were as follows:
Severn Plate - for Junior Pairs, in clinker-built boats.
First Heat: Manchester Irwell Amateur RC bt Stourport Institute BC - H.Jeffries and A.W.Tunkiss, C.Baylis (cox).
Second Heat: Bewdley RC bt Stourport Institute B.C.-G.Tolley and H.Richards, S.Glover (cox).
Final Heat: Manchester Irwell ARC bt Bewdley RC. Although the Bewdley pair were not to be despised, the Manchester men came away easily and won without difficulty.
President's Prize - for Scullers, presented by Mr Baldwin.
First Heat - R.H.Whitcombe, Bewdley RC bt F.Billington, Chester St.Thomas RC.
Second Heat - E.Brown, Evesham RC r.o.
Final Heat: R.H.Whitcombe bt E.Brown. Won easily, Whitcombe leading from start to finish.
Members' Plate - for Junior Fours
First Heat: Hereford RC bt Stourport Institute BC - G.Crane, E.D.Charles, H.Jeffries, A.W.Tunkiss (st), C.Baylis (cox).
Second Heat: Worcester RC bt Manchester Irwell ARC.
Final Heat: Worcester RC bt Hereford RC. All the heats were won easily, the young Worcester crew showing their superiority in point of skill and stamina in both their heats.
Junior Sculls, for members of the Stourport Institute.
First Heat: H.Richards r.o.
Second Heat: J.Tolley bt W.H.Phesey.
Final Heat: H.Richards bt J.Tolley. Tolley gave in before the course was half passed over.
Town Plate, for Senior Fours
First Heat: Evesham RC r.o.
Second Heat: Hereford r.o.
The Worcester R.C. had entered but reserved themselves for the final of the Members' Plate, although the Town Plate was of double the value.
Final Heat: Evesham RC bt Hereford RC. Evesham appeared to win easily, the Hereford men being apparently young beginners.
There were some athletic sport (of a sort) at the close of the rowing matches.
