SBC at The National Championships ... 1974
Stourport's Senior A Coxless Four found themselves up against very tough opposition at Nottingham last week, where they represented the club at the National Rowing Championships.
Their event was littered with international oarsmen, and their first heat included one half of the British National Eight, Leander, Leander/Tideway Scullers and Reading University, theonly other Senior A crew to enter. Stourport held third place at 1000 metres after the Leander lightweight crew had stopped for a short spell, but could not hold off Reading's challenge at the finish. A 14 mph head wind prevailed throughout the race showing Stourport's time of 8.14 to compare favourably with three crews from the other heat.
In the repechage their opponents included the Leander Lightweights, Nottingham and Union and Poplar, Blackwall and District R.C. At 1000 metres Stourport were still in touch with Poplar but saw them gradually pull away over the next half of the course. Their time 7.33, though some 30 seconds behind the internationals would have placed them ahead of Reading and within a length of Kingston in the other repechage, who had less wind to contend with.
Three of the crew are eligible for the new lightweight status, and it is interesting to note that had Stourport entered this event they could not have failed to win a Bronze Medal, and would probably have won Silver as there were only two finalists.
Crew names: P.Graetz, P.Lloyd, T.Edwards, R.Lloyd.
