SBC at Nottingham ... 1974

Perfect rowing conditions at the multi-lane rowing course in Nottingham could not lift Stourport higher than third place in two finals last weekend, Loughborough staged their regatta over 1000 metres of this course, and showed how exciting this type of racing can be when the weather is kind.
The Stourport Senior C Four, with one change from the original crew, finished three feet ahead of Hereford in their first heat, leaving Peterborough to limp in behind the umpire's launch. This put them in the final against Bewdley, Loughborough and Hereford again. Stourport led by half a length in the early stages of the race, but were overhauled by a strong Bewdley crew who under-rated the other three boats throughout the race. In the last 250 metres they were unable to answer Hereford's challenge and so finished third, some 1 1/2 lengths behind the winners.
Representing Stourport in Novice Sculls, Richard Lloyd won his first heat from Leicester, Hereford and Trent to put him in a 6 boat final. This was an exciting race in which the lead changed three times, Richard leading for a short time around the 500 metre mark before the eventual winner from Nottingham Boat Club came through. He was followed by Nottingham Britannia who just beat Stourport into third place ahead of Northwich, Loughborough and Leicester.
Senior C Four: M.Edmonds, P.Lashford, E.Mol, P.Downes, cox M.Cook.
The club is now deep in prepararion for Stourport Regatta next Saturday. In previous years the river has threatened to put an end to this event by near flooding, so it is hoped that this year it will stay down.
