Triple Success ... 1974

Stourport Boat Club, flushed from their triple success at their own sprint regatta, failed to produce winning form at Shrewsbury last weekend.
The Senior C Four beat Hereford's and Bewdley's second crews where they met the indestructable Ironbridge crew. This crew has been together four years with one success but nevertheless do have a vast store of experience in racing. This they used to their advantage on the Shrewsbury course which starts with a steep bend, Stourport having the inside station. As the two crews emerged from the bend Stourport should have pulled level, thus reducing the staggered advantage given to the crew on the outside of the bend, but were in fact one length down. Stourport attacked hard for the last 500 metres and were coming through gradually at the finish, eventually losing by 3 feet. Ironbridge were beaten by Belmont in the final.
The novice four making a first appearance after only three outings together looked a good combination, and won their first race against a strong Seagull crew by a comfortable distance. They were then unfortunate to meet a strong Hereford crew so soon, who beat them by 1/2 length after a close, exciting race.
In the Novice Sculls division, John Timmins sculled well in losing to a powerful Pengwern sculler, after he had led for most of the course, eventually losing by 1/2 length.
