Stourport Win at Hereford ... 1976
The Boat Club notched up its third win of the winter season by taking Senior C restricted pairs at Hereford Small Boats Head last Saturday.
Mark Cook, Duncan Gwilliam and cox Chris Downes completed the 3 1/2 mile downstream course in 16.49, 29 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals, also from Stourport, being Mark Daglish, Steve Downes and cox Paul Rice. Both pairs beat the other two entrants, being Belmont Abbey and Hereford and it is a good pointer to the coming season. This is Duncan’s second pot in two weekends which is satisfying after a fruitless season.
The Boat Club were not so successful in other events, though results were not disappointing. In Senior C Fours Henry Evans, George Handley, Steve Webster and Adam Harris, coxed by Chris Downes finished a good fifth out of 11 in their division, one second behind the fourth crew, their time of 15.10 faired well over other entries in fours. The two pairs who had rowed in the morning swapped parteners in the afternoon to race in junior 18 coxless and junior 16 coxed restricted pairs, but were not able to produce the same form as shown in the morning. Richard Lloyd and Tom Edwards also rowed in the morning and afternoon in coxless pairs and double sculls respectively, fourth of four and second of two did not exactly inspire the supporters though lack of training was expected to produce a similar result.
Winter training has now commenced and the club will be racing once more before the cross-country run on December 11th.
